Into the dark

[I'm assuming the marching order is as follows: Orthos and Mercurio up front; Varel and Wolfie in the middle; Laurie and Nibben bringing up the rear.]

The party cautiously follows the impatient raven into the fetid hole. Just wider than six feet in diameter, it tunnels down at a gentle slope, its walls made of nothing sturdier than compacted earth held together by the root systems of surrounding vegetation.

Approximately 20 feet down, the floor of the tunnel reveals a set of old stone stairs, half-buried in the dirt, their edges eroded by the ages. The dirt walls gradually expose more and more hardened stone, and the earthen tunnel eventually merges into a subterranean corridor. This appears to be a fully excavated structure, though of an unknown origin and ancient vintage, long since buried and forgotten by time.

The foul smell intensifies. In the glow of Orthos’ supernatural flames, various bones and piles of excrement – some old, but others quite fresh – can be seen littering the floor, requiring careful footwork to avoid. The corridor continues straight ahead, but openings to the left and to the right can also be seen in the dim light.

As the group considers its next move, the sound of drums suddenly echoes all around them: a deep, irregular thrumming, like the heartbeat of a dying man.

Nibben lowers his voice to a whisper. "I really don't like the sound of that, not one bit."

He pulls his hood over his head and slowly slinks off into the shadows.

Markus looks back at the space Nibben used to be. His face an odd mix of disgust and amusement. "Sheiss, th' pip joinked th'idea from me brain-box," he whispers. He looks around, listening to the drums and eying the shadows, his weapon-hand reaches into his cloak before going back to his morning star. "This may be ugly."

He waits a beat, then turns to Orthos.

"Er, na offense, mate."

The ominous, uneven drumming is joined by ritualistic chanting: Goth-burguul! Thrakuga za shara-buub u throqub! Throqat ta! Thorqat tab hosh! Thrakat ta duumpat!

A fervent chorus of voices screeches a ghastly refrain: Duumpat! Duumpat!! Duumpat!!!

The unholy sound echoes madly all around you. Every survival instinct in your body is telling you to flee. Whoever these pagans are, there must be dozens of them!

The raven caws loudly and takes wing in the tunnel, flying headlong into the darkness.

Varel keeps her place in the party order, and urges the group to be brave and continue forward.

"If there's a chance the children are here, we must continue, regardless of Goblins, Trolls, or worse."
He waits a beat, then turns to Markus and gives a sly wink.
"No offense."
Orthos readies his staff and follows cautiosly after the raven.

[Looks like the party is continuing on ahead! I will post a new main thread soon, but feel free to continue the RP and describe whatever preparations your characters are making or precautions they are taking.]

Laurie urges the group along after the raven. "We have to find those children. If you're scared, imagine how frightened they are. Hurry up!"

Markus snickers at Orthos' comment. He sees the determination on everyone's eyes then sighs. "Fine, I goin'. Bu' iffin' I die, I haunt th' fekk outta ye'all." He then grabs his cloak with his off-hand and, in a rather deft maneuver, whirls it around on his body. The cloak is reversed, with the vibrant crimson now replaced by a subtle indigo.
