Varel: "Follow me, we can take shelter and rest at my cabin!"

Orthos talks rapidly while trying to catch his breath. "Wait, did everyone make it out? Do we know if we found all the survivors? There was another missing child, do we think they're gone?"

When Varel calls out, the newly freed young wizard emerges from his hiding place among some ferns.

The sopping wet cloak sticks to Salbadore's body. You can clearly see that something big and square is bulging underneath it, perhaps in some large pocket sewn into the back and previously hidden among its folds. Salbadore is still carrying the box.

"Ho!" he yells. He grins and waves. His first moments of freedom spent hiding, he now half-lopes, half-skates through the humus and brush to rejoin the group.

Markus stands outside, his eyes closed, letting the rain wash over him. He takes out his flask and downs a large portion of it.

He nods to Varel. "Roit, les' go, lass." As he puts his flask away he looks over at Wolfie, Salbadore, and Laurie.

"I c'n 'elp carry som-" he starts to say, but his wounded knee buckles and he falls to the ground.

He picks himself up, and pokes around for a good walking stick. He smiles, "Yeah, this walk mi' be 'arder'n th' bogeys back at that."

Markus stops at Orthos's comment, his face somber. "I think we all 'ere, mate. An iffin they 'notha wee one, we nae 'elp em if we dead."

Nibben nervously looks around. "None of you could possibly begin to comprehend the horrors of seen! It'll be a cold day in my workshop before I'd ever step foot into that cave again!"

"If there are, then we won't get them now!" Sal answers Orthos. "Haste now! We must be away from here before the snake subdues the bauenmann!"

"We need to get to safety, then we can consider going back for more. Come on, let's go!"

The party, slowed by its various injuries and burdens, slogs through the torrential weather and the slick, soggy mixture of mud and wet leaves on the ground.

As night falls, they finally arrive at Varel's hut, the interior of which has been partially soaked by the rain pouring in through the hole in the roof.

The adventurers settle in as Varel gets a fire started under the hearth, grateful for a chance to dry off, rest their feet, and tend to their wounds.

The child in Laurie's arms stirs. She looks around, too confused to be scared. Looking up at Laurie, she realizes, "Hey, you're not my mommy."

Salbadore is already accosting Varel for some dry clothes to borrow.

When the child speaks to Laurie, Salbadore looks away, maybe too purposefully, too transparently.

Varel dresses the party's wounds as best as she is able, and offers magical healing once she's had a chance to meditate and commune with the cool faerie spirits again.

Poor Wolfie huddles in the corner of Varel's hut under her bed, barking viciously at anyone save Varel who approaches him. His wounds have been dressed and one of his legs appears to be set up in a cast.

"Poor thing." Varel sighs as she applies a poutice to Mercurio's arm. "The urine will sting but it will also disinfect your wound. It has powerful healing properties."

To the child: "Does your mommie live near here? We'll take you back to her as soon as we're fit to travel."

"NO!" The child loudly insists. "I WANT MY MOMMY NOW!"

She cries inconsolably for ten minutes or so before (thankfully) falling asleep again.
