The jewel of Kauhedl

The weather is agreeable and the Road runs wide and smooth over flat grassland. Urged onward by Orthos, who seems to be beholden to some deadline, the travelers push themselves and reach Freybourne in just under a week.

Though Mercurio jokes and shares ribald tales, and Laurie’s lute makes the journey seem less long, there is little in the way of meaningful conversation between the members of the party; Orthos is preoccupied with reaching the city and makes little time for banter, while Salbadore still struggles under the weight of his recent losses. Nibben turns the riddle of his kinsman’s captivity over and over in his mind while scribbling notes furiously, and Varel finds that she misses her grove and her woodland friends more than she anticipated.

Freybourne is truly the jewel of Kauhedl, unrivaled in its architecture and civilized wonders. Magical lanterns light the streets, while His Excellency’s winged corps keeps the skies safe day and night. A complex system of aqueducts channels water from the Siannan River, while subterranean tunnels funnel the city’s waste into the sea. Apothecaries offer a variety of expensive potions and panaceas that are widely coveted by country-folk, who are often willing to spend all they have to secure a curative for whatever ails.

Though overwhelmingly human in its demographics, small bands of Gnomes and Halflings are also known to visit the city to peddle their wares, as do foreigners from distant duchies such as Qulaun and Ucidab, bringing exotic offerings of food and other cultural exports.

And, of course, there is the College of High Summoning, the gilded spires of which tower over all other structures in the city. It is not uncommon to see a learned wizard running errands about town with creatures conjured from who-knows-where to do any heavy lifting that may be required.

Life here is hurried, but orderly, and the Duke’s constabulary make their presence strongly felt to deter unlawful activity. Members of His Excellency’s infantry and navy also frequent the city, such that persons seeking to circumvent the law by necessity have to be much more clever and more subtle than most criminals in order to do so successfully.

This fact first becomes apparent at the front gates of the city, which is manned by Ducal Constables who demand to know the identities and business of all who pass through them: “Who are you? From whence do you come? Wherefore do you seek to enter His Grace’s city? Where will you be staying, and for how long?”

As the travelers attempt to come through the gate and provide satisfactory answers to these inquiries, one of the officers wearing a set of thick green spectacles stops them in their tracks. “That box!” He exclaims at Salbadore, accusatorily. “Who are you to possess such a thing, and what are your intentions for bringing it here? Present your permit!”

Salbadore stands at attention, and carries on with this explaination for as long as the official permits him to do so:

"My name is Salbadore Wolfgramm Cane. I am a genomancer of the Lebenskraft Guildhouse. I am bearing this box to Lord Virgis Grimrune at the College of High Summoning on behalf of Lady Belarva. I have no permit - it was stolen from me over the course of a terrible misadventure. This is Orthos Sudlow, a mage from the Summoners' College. He was sent from here to expedite the delivery of this very box. These are the people who have rescued me from captivity and guarded this precious artifact. . ."

The constables listen to Salbadore's tale before consulting what appears to be a manifest or ledger.

"Here it is. Lord Virgis... blue box... Huh. Seems the College has been expecting this delivery for some time now."

(Scribble, scribble.)

"Very well, you may proceed."

Having passed through the city gate, Salbadore stands in the midst of the thick crowd of people passing through the checkpoint. He calms Mayna - who doesn't really appear all that ruffled at all - with a goodberry, which he's saved from breakfast with Varel.

Ahead of him, there are the spires of the High College, but its origin is lost among the skyline of terraces and towers. Forward, Salbadore sees only a long street, overflowing with throngs of people, animals, and artifices.

To either side there are store fronts that seem to unfold into the street. In front of these are hawkers peddling all manner of exotic goods to the citizens - a crown; fancy shirts and sarongs; toy lizards - and domestic products to the foreigners - a miniature version of the famous Gilded Tower; a tincture of arthritis-curing seal fat; heaping plates of hot bhaji cooked in broad open air frying pans.

Squeezed between the narrow stores are row after row of the Jewel's less well-known features. Standing in the pee-ridden alleys just past the gate are a sampling of the slope-backed old prostitutes who frequent the city gates in search of poor or desperate travelers. Beggar kids, not stupid enough to make a scene so close to the guarded gates, carefully eye the newcomers. As a preventative measure Salbadore sneers at one of them and sends her scurrying into the crowds like a mouse used to living in the spaces between other people.

Salbadore slows and awaits Orthos. "Aye, this is your town! Show the way, good Orthos." As he waits, he adjusts his coin purse.

Orthos smiles and says, "Certainly, let's rest our tired legs." He then leads the party a block ahead, to a group of men standing next to several hand-pulled rickshaws. After negotiating, he passes them a few coins and gestures for his friends to pair up on the vehicles.

The rickshaw ride is long as it travels the sprawling roads of the Metropolis, passing through several distinct districts. First they pass the bustling, yet small gnomish district near the edge of Freybourne, then the overcrowded trader's market. Onward, skirting by the grand mansions of a wealthy district and cutting through the dilapidated streets of a more impoverished section. Twice they get closer to the college; they are forced to move to the side of the road to yield for a unit of His Excellency’s finest inquisitors.

Orthos’ mood increases markedly with each step toward the college. He visibly relaxes, having returned to an environment he is familiar with. Orthos stops the travel only once before reaching the gates of Freybourne’s College of High Summoning, paying a few coins for some exotic dishes for his companions.

The rickshaws stop near the gates of the college. Orthos thanks the men who brought them here while everyone dismounts. He then leads the group on foot through the amazing architecture of the entrance and the large courtyard. Signaling for a page, he asks to meet with someone named Qroc. Then, gesturing for everyone to follow, he rests on a nearby marble bench in the courtyard.

Qroc appears in the courtyard with a flash of brimstone, little leather wings flapping while his barbed tail swishes anxiously. “Fuck!” He exclaims to Orthos. “Cutting it a little close, aren’t we? Lord Virgis’ birthday party has already commenced! We must hur—“

He stops, noticing the other adventurers for the first time. He blinks; the corners of his mouth twitch; he tries for a moment to stifle his giggles before erupting into uncontrollable laughter.

“Oh! Oh, Orthos, what have we here? A songstress… nice catch, does she play a little night music now and then? Ha ha! Now here’s one for you: a witch, a drunk, and a pip walk into a whorehouse… no, no, it’s too easy. And look, a little genomancer with a birdie! Maybe he’ll be good enough to teach you some real magic, eh? Hee hee hee!”

He composes himself. “Ahem. Where was I? Oh, yes! We must hurry before they cut the cake! Follow me!”

Laurie is quiet on the ride to Freybourne, other than the strumming of her lute. Occasionally she'll sing along, but the tunes are haunting, despondent melodies.

Once they are past the guards in Freybourne, she can not help by show her amazement at the wonders of the city. She takes a rickshaw with Markus, and continually exclaims or points at a new sight to behold along the ride.

When they get to the college, she alights from the rickshaw with a bit of a skip, looking around at the beautiful buildings that surround them. Qroc's attempt at at joke elicits a frown, but she quickly smiles again.

"I'm beginning to feel like the term "pip" is not only offensive, but racist as well. Perhaps there could be a less offensive term you could come up with for gnomes. Perhaps "gnome"."

"Perhaps 'whiny li'l bitch'?" Qroc sneers over his shoulder. "Less bitching, more moving!"

Salbadore hurries behind Qroc, trying to adjust his clothes and carry the unwieldy blue box forward at the same time. As he follows, he exclaims, "Am I to present this to Lord Virgis dressed like this?"

Order of the Broken Clock said...

"Watch yourself creature. I'd hate to have to seperate you from your tongue."

Qroc stops in his tracks, hovering.

"Holy crap! You're right! You all look terrible!"

He puzzles for a moment.

"Orthos, take the box and your little friends and meet me outside the Great Hall. I have an idea."

"Here we go," Qroc says, carrying a ring that is much too large for him. As he rubs it, a powerful gust of wind barrels through the corridors of the college, and a towering, dusky-skinned humanoid appears before him. It bows.

"Hello, djinni," Qroc says. "You see these losers? They're late for a party, and terribly underdressed! Fix that, won't you?"

The djinni bows again, and a boing sound is heard as a small pile of finery appears on the floor.

"That is all," Qroc says, and the djinni bows once more before vanishing in the wind.

"I'm so fucking smart it scares me," he marvels. "Anyway. Clothes. Put 'em on!"

As Salbadore undresses and acquaints himself with the sealed-in funk of days of traveling, he becomes self-conscious about wearing such finery over his own seeping, stinking body. He is struck with some confusion as to how he should address the problem to the creature before him. Lebenskrafters rarely utilize speaking familiars - and though affectionate bonds form between a genomancer and his Umganglichtier, they are discouraged from becoming friendly with other mages' companion animals. Clearly Lord Virgis' assistant, however, is a creature of some authority here . . .

Salbadore realizes that he has at his own disposal the means to solve his problem. Stripped down to his breeches, Salbadore completes the operation swiftly. It is not proper genomancy and he is a bit loathe to wield the Zauberkreis in front of others. Yet, all base magics are but corruptions of the one true work, the operation of life. He draws the circle so quickly that it is difficult to follow his lines. Without any fanfair, he pronounces, "suffragium!"

The dust of the road and the sweat of the street are lifted off of him. They rise into a filthy cloud, which climbs high into the air before it is captured by the currents that flow through the ingenuously designed ventilation system of this spectacular building.

"All clean now!" he announces cheerily. As he begins to get dressed, he ventures a question to the familiar despite his reservations. "Master Qroc, what is this you said about a birthday party? Am I to deliver this package to the Devil Tamer at his birthday party?"

Laurie contemplates the pile of clothing and Salbatore's cantrip for a moment, then pulls a waterskin and a cloth out of her backpack. She proceeds to try and give herself a spongebath and dress as modestly as possible, but her attempts are woefully inadequate in the wide open hallway. She pulls up her hair, although unruly whisps fall out and cover the tops of her ears.

Pulling out a small mirror, she whispers to herself, "Looks like I'm all set to go to Lord Grimrune's birthday party." She then puts it away, and turns to Qroc. "Pardon me, sir, but would there be somewhere I could store my things? They don't seem in keeping with the dress."

HomoDM said...

"Yes, birdman, that box you've been carrying is his birthday present. Did Orthos not tell you that? Ha ha."

"Uhm, yeah, there's a broom closet over there. You can just throw your shit in there for the time being."

Orthos said...

Orthos takes delight in picking his clothing from the pile of finery. Afterwards, he steps to one side of the hall, and for the sake of the women’s modesty, turns his back towards them. As he unabashedly changes and attempts to clean himself he speaks to Salbadore. "Sorry Dorey, I thought since you were delivering it, you knew.” He then crams all of his belongings into his backpack and throws it and his staff in the broom closet.

Markus says few things of note during the entrance into Freybourne. At the initial entry, Markus pardons himself heads to some alleyways. He cavorts with the locals nearby, most of which greet him with familiarity, though many calling him Mark or Merc or Mercurio. He respond to each as if they were family, sharing flasks and sharing coin without a second thought.

He turns to the party and winks at Laurie, "Join ye' cart inna bit, mates! Nae worry, I catch up wiffa."

---

Markus emerges from the shadows moments later, hopping onto Laurie's rickshaw. He greets the driver by name, and turns to Laurie, "Oy, lass, when we donnae th' biz'ness, we see th' town prophah," he says with a wink.

---

He rides along silently during the exchange of the wizards, changing his clothes without a word. The only thing he has to say during the entrance is to Nibben: "Yah, mate. Pip be a fekk mo' racist thennae think. Sorry, that."
